The Friends of the Community Gardens was formed in 2022 to support and advocate for the Town of Black Mountain Community Gardens. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and work closely with the Black Mountain Parks & Recreation.

Our volunteer and fundraising efforts benefit the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden’s internship and community education programs.  We represent gardeners who rent plots, volunteers, and all others interested in promoting our community’s vital relationship with growing food and the personal wellbeing that comes from gardening.

MISSION STATEMENT: To enhance, sustain and promote community gardens in the Town of Black Mountain through support, education, and advocacy.
VISION STATEMENT:  We envision a nation where community gardens are a vital resource for the physical, emotional, spiritual, social and ecological health of communities, neighborhoods, and towns.

The Dr. John Wilson Community Garden
Established in 2004 by Dr. John Wilson, this organic garden has grown into a vibrant operation tucked between mountains and the Swannanoa River. It includes rental garden plots and donation beds which provide fresh produce that is distributed to our community through Bounty and Soul.  The garden manager supervises and educates gardeners and volunteers in all aspects of the garden from prepping beds to planting seeds and seedlings to growing and harvesting the produce. The garden also relies on seasonal interns and community volunteers for its success.

The Black Mountain Library Garden
Established in 2021 the Black Mountain Library Garden is an area of raised beds behind the library. Local volunteers plant and grow their crops with no-till organic methods producing an array of wonderful vegetables and fruits.
